I am Damaris

I am an Afro-Latina. I was born in Colon, Republic of Panama. I grew up in Colon where the Caribbean people who helped build the Panama Canal settled. Since I am both black and Hispanic, I pertain to both cultures. I can dance Salsa, Merenque, Mambo and I can do the Cupid Shuffle, or sing to the lyrics of an Alicia Keys’ song.

My dark completion has caused many to mistake me for an African American and for some of my fellow Latinos to reject me. My Spanish speaking skills and affinity for Latin culture has made it hard for some African Americans to embrace me. Nevertheless, I continue to embrace both cultures. Yes, I am an Afro-Latina con mucho orgullo.
